The NEXT New Deal

This project was an internal strategy project completed for the NEXT Innovation Scholars program that kicked off in Fall of 2023. The NEXT New Deal is a 3-year-plan to optimize the NIS program by creating the infrastructure to allow for growth in years to come.

The Problem

NIS is still a new program (in its 3rd year at the time) that will double in size over the next few years with an identity that is still evolving. The team asked the question:

How might we build a foundation for NIS to reach its full potential?

Starting with our values

To kick off the NEXT New Deal era, the student team met with the program's Director to begin solidifying its values. After 3 months of refining and rewriting, the team presented these 10 values to the rest of the cohort.

Crafting our Mission Statement

While solidifying the program’s values, the team also worked on writing a mission statement that would unify the program.

We’re a transdisciplinary team of student leaders who serve as innovation catalysts for the UC ecosystem and beyond. We guide our partners, clients, and future generations of innovators to create their best future through curiosity, empathy, and the relentless pursuit of envisioning what's next.

Creating a Leadership Development Track

As NIS grows in size, it needs more leaders who are equipped with the skills, mindsets, and experiences to lead projects. Previously, NIS had no formal leadership positions and the question of “If I want to be a leader in NIS, where do I start?” was unanswered. This track was developed to give structure and opportunity to those who want more leadership in the program.

Early Prototypes

Creating the Leadership Development track from scratch took many prototypes.
