Future of Mobility + AI - MIT City Science Lab x Hyundai x DAAP
September 2024
MIT City Science Lab x Hyundai Technology Center x UC DAAP teamed up to host a 4 week long design sprint centered on envisioning the future of mobility and AI. The first 3 weeks were spent learning about futuring methodologies via workshops delivered by the MIT City Science team, Cincinnati community leaders, and DAAP faculty. The final weekend was a 48 hour design sprint.
The Ask: What is the future of mobility and AI within Cincinnati?
Result: 1st Place - UC News Story
Research
The team set out to do some research focusing on the East Walnut Hills neighborhood.
The team discovered that the neighborhood has been a food desert since 2017, after a grocery store left the area. This has forced residents to either buy groceries at gas station like stores and go without fresh produce, or travel long distances to access it. Many residents in the neighborhood have a low socioeconomic status, making this either unattainable or extremely difficult.
Utilizing a cardboard box and string lights, the team demonstrated how vehicles could move through the city.
Creating the Final Product
Taking an analog approach to the project, the team used stop motion techniques and storytelling to communicate their final idea.
Team arranging hand drawn images to illustrate what the future might hold.
The team took over 400 images to create the final product.
Final Result
The team created a final video titled “MIGAS” - a spanish word for crumbs. The title captures both the spirit of bringing people together and the modular nature of the AI driven vehicle designs.
The team took 1st place and their work was displayed at MIT’s City Science Lab.
